COVID and Black California

Dashboard

“This peer-reviewed dashboard that looked at the impact of COVID-19 on Black bodies in communities around the state.”
Methods and Sources

Methodology:
Expanding on the community specific dashboards provided by local City and State health officials at the height of the pandemic, this dashboard is the aggregations of multiple Covid-19 and demographic datasets provided by .gov entities. In some cases minor statistical analysis was done to concisely summarize provided data, however, to keep inline with the purpose of this dashboard (to provided accurate, up-to-date, limited bias data on COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, deaths and community impact) manipulations of the source data was kept to an extreme minimum.

External Sources:
Census Bureau, California Department of Public Health, Various County/City Level Government Publications, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment Development Department, Esri

“The tool not only focuses on COVID-19’s impact on these communities but also looks at the evolving nature of the virus in relation to variants like Delta, as well as providing a window into vaccine acceptance by Black residents in the state. Alex Gil peer-reviewed this resource in the scholarly journal, Reviews in Digital Humanities. “
